What Is Dyscalculia?

It is characterised by persistent difficulties with number sense - understanding quantities, numerical relationships, and the meaning of numbers. Individuals may also experience challenges with arithmetic, recalling number facts, estimating, mathematical reasoning, and solving problems.
These difficulties can affect many aspects of everyday life, including telling the time, handling money, estimating quantities, following numerical information, and developing confidence in mathematics. While many people find maths difficult at times, dyscalculia is a distinct and lifelong difference that is not explained by inadequate teaching, lack of opportunity, or low intelligence.
Dyscalculia exists on a continuum, with individuals experiencing varying levels of difficulty. It is estimated to affect around 3–6% of the population and often occurs alongside other specific learning differences, such as dyslexia or ADHD.
